Why A Jute Scrubby? Because they dry fast, never sour, resist bacteria, scrub beautifully, shed no microplastics, lasts longer than sponges, and return to the earth when you’re done. A simple, natural tool that keeps your sink fresh and your dishes clean.
Does A Jute Scrubby Get Mold or Mildew?
Almost never… because
Jute is a natural plant fiber that dries very quickly, doesn’t trap water deep inside the fibers, has natural antimicrobial compounds, and allows airflow through the crochet structure
Mold and mildew need:
- Moisture
- Darkness
- Stagnant air
- Organic debris
A jute scrubby simply doesn’t provide that environment.
When Could Jute Mold? (Rare)
Only if someone leaves it sitting in a puddle, stores it in a sealed container while wet, and/or never rinses out food particles.
Even then, it’s far less likely than with a sponge.
Why Sponges Mold but Jute Doesn’t…
They hold water deep inside, stay damp for hours, trap food particles, and/or create a warm, wet breeding ground.
A Jute Scrubby dries fast, doesn’t trap moisture, and stays airy and breathable.
My story that lead me on the journey that ended up enjoying my Jute Scrubby.
For years, the stink at my sink had a mind of its own. No matter how much I scrubbed, that stubborn sour smell kept coming back… especially in the warmer months. And the worst part was touching my scrubby and smelling that stink transfer right onto my hands. Cotton rags would spoil. Sponges would also stink, fall apart and turn on me prematurely, but not as quickly as the cotton rags. Every few days, the smell would creep back like it owned the place.
Then one day, I remembered a story I’d read online about a grandmother who threw a sad fit because she was being asked to use cotton to make her dish rags. She wanted her jute twine: nothing else would do.
That was it! That was my Key! I grabbed a roll of plain, untreated jute twine and put together a little scrubby… just to see what would happen.
It was my happy turning point.
Jute doesn’t behave like cotton or sponges. It doesn’t hold moisture as long. It dries fast. Because of this, it is resistant to the bacteria spoiled smells. No sour smell. No mystery funk. It just quietly does its job and lays there on top of my soap dish to dry like a well‑mannered guest.
And that’s when I realized: My tools didn’t have to stink at the sink.
The jute scrubby changed everything for me, and that is when I knew I wanted to share it here with you with confidence and busting the false narrative out there saying they mold and mildew. Mold and mildew are Not my experience with them…. Peace is my experience… sweet peace!
Just something natural, usable, compostable… and it has lasted me longer than the store‑bought sponges. A total win for this crunchy momma… No more micro plastics on my dishes!!! Hurray!
A simple, natural fiber that stays fresh, works hard, and leaves the kitchen smelling like… nothing… which is exactly how a clean sink should smell.
Every time I rinse it out and lay it down to dry, I’m reminded that sometimes the smallest, simplest switch makes the biggest difference.
